Les pièges du Québec, manufacturers of the SAUVAGEAU brand, are the originators of the original double-framed trap specially created for professional trappers. We take great pride in applying the highest quality standards to all our products.
Starting with the 2001 series, which is extremely popular in all Canadian provinces and territories, the M-15 bear trap, the best-selling bear trap in the history of trapping - all over America!
LE PIÈGE QUÉBECOIS was founded by Claude Sauvageau in 1970 to offer trappers new products in a market largely dominated by leg-hold traps at the time.
It was out of a concern for humanitarian ethics that he developed new trap concepts, two of which he patented. Another innovation was to replace the chain with a small anchoring cable, which improved handling and prevented entanglement.
In 1977, the company changed its name to LES PIÈGES DU QUÉBEC. Claude Sauvageau returned to his roots on his trap line in Northern Quebec, and his brother Marcel Sauvageau took over full-time management of the company. The double-frame trap was developed. Initially meant for beavers, an 11 x 11-inch trap was created and quickly became popular.
This new concept allowed for increased tightening and offered entirely new possibilities. Later, this principle was applied to a slightly smaller trap. The 8 x 8 1/2 was used for the arctic fox with great success. Shortly after, the same principle was applied to a 4 1/2 x 5 trap which became popular for martens. One thing led to another, and all popular formats for most species were made this way.
One of the patents mentioned above is for the bear trap. We named it the M-15. This trap is brilliant for its ease of installation and revolutionary design. The trap rapidly caught the attention of trappers, who were quick to adopt it, making it the best-selling bear trap in history!
In early 1996, Marcel invented a new lock he called "la fine". This lock will be manufactured in 2 sizes: 1/16 and 3/32. It's a lock perfectly suited to the manufacture of snares; it's smaller, stronger, faster and bites better.
He also invented a new paddle trigger for minks, which is easy to install and highly sensitive. Among other things, this system offered a new way of quickly putting old traps with broken triggers back into service - an interesting advantage.
In 1997, sons Guy Sauvageau and Paul Sauvageau took over. A name change was made to the structure: the acronym L.P.D.Q. SAUVAGEAU, which still stands for Les pièges du Québec, and a new logo was chosen.
In 1998, a new, larger trap was introduced: the 2001-12. Shortly after, the Bionic trap was built following an agreement with an Alberta inventor, Mr. Gabry. This well-built, powerful trap was put on the market until the early 2000s. However, production required all staff to concentrate on double framing, and production was put aside.
Today, it's an object of curiosity. On the production side, several technical improvements were made in this decade, especially in automation, as we now have the expertise on site to build our own machines.
In 2000, Paul left the company and Guy became the last Sauvageau at the head of the company, taking the opportunity to introduce pre-dyed traps (using Speed-dip). In 2003, we reintroduced a trigger that Claude had imagined at the very beginning, but which had been neglected: the screw trigger for baiting beavers, which is still very popular today.
Over the years, a number of innovations have been added to our range, including the sale of dyed traps and products such as different models of collar locks, new safety tools and a new trap design.
In 2023, Guy Sauvageau passed the torch to a new generation of trappers and entrepreneurs well known in the industry: Marc Dussault, owner of Mactrap and co-owner of Entreprises Bélisle, and his sidekick Marc Sorel, well known to Mactrap customers for many years. We are therefore very excited to take on this new challenge and perpetuate the work of the Sauvageau family, proudly serving Canadian trappers.
Sauvageau traps have always had the reputation of making robust traps that are highly appreciated by Canadian trappers. They have maintained this manufacturing quality over the years and have made improvements to their product range.
